Minister for Education Mahendra Reddy yesterday launched the students and parents pledge at Narere Primary School in Narere.

He said the students pledge would be repeated by them every day at their schools and would become an inseparable part of their life.

In an interview after the launch Mr Reddy said that it would be compulsory for all teachers in schools around Fiji to repeat to students their pledge.

He said the Ministry of Education would print 220,000 copies of pledges and would distribute to all primary and secondary students.

According to Mr Reddy the students pledge will assist the children to see where they are heading to, are they in the right direction, what changes must they bring in to reach the end goals and what are their needs to reach that goal.

“The trend of these children’s involvement in risky behavior has to be halted,” he said.

These children were involving themselves in harmful actions like failing to attend school regularly, late arrival to school and classes, truancy, disruptive behaviour in class, bullying, consumption of alcohol, kava, tobacco, drug, engaging in sexual activities, teenage pregnancies, showing disrespect to parents, teachers, elders and vandalism.

The student’s pledge include making a commitment to respect, care for parents, teacher, friends and elders, staying healthy through exercise and believing in themselves through faith in God.

Parents pledge includes being a friend and spending quality time with their children, making sure their child gets to school daily and respecting school rules and keeping the child away from immoral behaviour and harmful drugs.
