It’s wonderful to know that the Fijian International will be part of the European Tour and it is quite a phenomenal success for us: Attorney-General

The Fijian International 2016 will be part of the European Tour for the first time since the tournament’s tee-off three years ago.

The entry to the European Tour marks a new chapter for the most sought-after golf prize in the Pacific.

Launching the tournament last night, Acting Prime Minister and Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said this would boost the tournament image and increase global reach.

He said: “It’s wonderful to know that the Fiji International be part of the European Tour and it is quite a phenomenal success for us.”

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum thanked PGA of Australia chief executive officer Brian Thorburn and his team for making the event a reality.

“Many people in Fiji do not realise the significance of being on the European Tour and many people do not necessary realise that part of the Fijian International gives us a particular level of exposure that is unprecedented.”

The Attorney-General also said having the Fijian International be part of the European Tour would help the nation reach into new markets.

He mentioned that Fiji’s exposure was critical for the country.

Mr Thorburn said: “We set our goal to make the tournament bigger then 2014 and 2015 and we have achieved that.

“The date will be October 6 to 9 with a strong field of golfers to come to Fiji at the wonderful Natadola Bay.

“The European Tour is among the world prestigious tours along with the US PGA tour.”

He said some of the world’s top golfers will be part of the event this year.
