Vodafone Fijians 7s flyer Josua Vici will be the extra boost that Army Green needs in the 40th Fiji Bitter Marist 7s competition which starts today at the ANZ Stadium, Suva.

The 22-year-old from Niudua, Naceva in Kadavu has been given the all clear to play in the Marist 7s from national coach Ben Ryan along with three other players Sevuloni Moceinacagi, Nemani Nagusa and Alivereti Veitokani.

Vici who arrived in the country yesterday morning with the Fiji 7s team looked forward to the opportunity to work on specific areas as he targets to be included in the two remaining tournaments of the World Sevens series in Paris and London.

“I am well prepared for the Marist 7s because of the two weeks of being away in Hong Kong and Singapore training with the team,” Vici said.

“It is good to be back with the boys again and playing with them especially in the Marist 7s which has been going on for a long time.

“Playing in this tournament will give me a chance to improve even more as a player because we all know that playing against Fijians is always tough mainly because every team is preparing well for the Marist 7s and it will be a really challenging tournament.

“Being away with the Vodafone Fijian 7s team has been a really good learning experience for me; not only have I learnt a lot from Ben (Ryan) but also from the players who I look up to.

“Game time is something that I need and I know that we won the Nawaka 7s, so I hope to help my team seek another title this weekend.”

The bigger picture that nearly all of the Fiji 7s players will be looking to is booking a spot on the final squad to the Rio Olympics in August and Vici is no exception to that.

“I am fighting for a place in the Rio Olympic squad, everyone who has played in the team has the same goal,” he said.

“It will be hard fighting for a place against those coming from overseas and also the local boys as well so it will be tough but I need to focus on myself and work on my strengths, my speed and upper body fitness.

“If I focus on myself and my training and being the best I can be, the rest will fall into place.”

Meanwhile, team manager Eroni Koroi said the team was delighted to have Vici in the squad.

“Josua (Vici) will be playing for us this weekend, it has already been confirmed that he can play in the Marist 7s, only Isake Katonibau and Emosi Mulevoro will not be playing,” Koroi said.

“His presence in the team will be a boost for us especially after being under the guidance of Ben Ryan.”
