The Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, has called on the young accountants to speak up and give their opinions.

He was addressing delegates at the 2016 Fiji Institute of Accountants Congress at the Sheraton Fiji Resort yesterday on Denarau Island.

“What I would like to propose to you is we need the input of everyone here and everyone in the country – from the business leaders and executives to the young accountants,” he said.

“This is in order to create a strong country and a solid foundation for economic growth and expand our economic base.”

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said approximately 70 per cent of our population is below the age of 40 out of which, 54 per cent is below the age of 30.

“It presents challenges but also opportunities which we should grasp as a country,” he said.

“With for example the business community, we hardly see those below the age of 40 engaging with us.

“The point is we have the youth of our country who are not mainstreamed. I think it is very critical that they are mainstreamed.

“In order to get that innovative thinking, we have to realise where we are and what we can do. ”

With the next Budget now to be announced in August, Mr Sayed-Khaiyum has called on the young accountants to come forward with their ideas to get them counted.

“We really hope we don’t get the same faces to make the submissions,” he said.

He has urged organisations to talk to their younger members when making their submissions and get their ideas included as well in the submission.

“We will have in the future a forum for people below the age of 40 and we do want to hear them.”

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum ended by stating: “Youth should not just be job seekers – they should also be job creators and we have to give them the opportunity to do so.”
