The Supreme Court of Fiji has ruled that lawyer Rajendra Chaudhry be suspended from practice in Fiji till March 1, 2017.

He has also been ordered to pay the Chief Registrar $5000 in costs.

Chaudhry was suspended following findings by the Independent Legal Services Commission that he was guilty of professional misconduct when he represented Indian national Muskan Balaggan in court after she alleged that he had raped her.

Balaggan had then withdrawn her allegations against Chaudhry. She was charged with giving false information to a public servant, for which Chaudhry appeared on her behalf in court.

The Commission had suspended Chaudhry from practice till March 1, 2017. The matter was then appealed by Chaudhry and the Court of Appeal had reduced the suspension period to March 1, 2015.

The matter was brought before the Supreme Court. It was heard by Chief Justice Anthony Gates who is the President of the Supreme Court, Justice of the Supreme Court Justice Saleem Marsoof and Justice of the Supreme Court Justice Brian Keith.

The hearing was on April 6 and a ruling was delivered yesterday. It was ruled by the Supreme Court of Fiji that the Commission’s decision to suspend Chaudhry from practice in Fiji till March 1, 2017 was correct.

Representing Chaudhry in court was Suva lawyer Anand Singh.
