Despite being one of the worst hit areas during Tropical Cyclone Winston, this did not deter First Light Taveuni from participating in the Fiji Bitter Marist 7s tournament.

The Vanua Levu-based side were happy of the opportunity of developing their rugby skills and move on a level further.

The team consisted of youths from Taveuni who are mostly high school students.

Coach Sevanaca Bogi said from watching the team’s performance in the wet weather, he believes they had performed to the best of their abilities.

“We decided to enter the Marist sevens to develop our skills,” he said.

“We have been competing in a lot of tournaments in Vanua Levu and wanted to meet with the teams from Viti Levu.”

Bogi said for the love of the game, players conducted their fundraising drives and the trip was funded by their church pastor.

“We are so happy to be here. So far we have competed in 13 tournaments in Vanua Levu and won six so we hope to learn as much from the experience we will gain here,” he added.
