Most of the players are playing rugby for the first time

The Wardens women’s sevens team are one of the new teams to watch in the Fiji Bitter Marist 7s tournament that got underway at the ANZ Stadium, Suva yesterday.

Though most of the players are playing rugby for the first time the management are confident of the development of the squad and how they could improve.

Coach Metuisela Vueti said the formation of the team was an initiative of the Fiji Corrections Service Commissioner Francis Kean.

The Wardens women’s side had the likes of Telecom Fijiana reps of Brittany Coates, Vaiti Waqatabu and Suliana Gusuivalu.

“The girls did well today and although most of them were playing rugby for the first time it was good to see them perform to their best,” Vueti said.

“With the three girls from the Fijiana team playing, this really boosted the whole squad.”

Vueti said although they lost their first match against Striders he was happy with their performance keeping in mind they had just got the girls together to train and represent them in the tournament.

“Brittany too had just flown into the country last night but so far so good.”

He added one of the contributing factors that affected their performance is the wet ground conditions.

“Men are used to playing in the wet and muddy grounds not women so I believe this is something we have to work on while playing with other experienced teams,” Vueti added.
