Sugarcane farmer Shiu Raj was a proud man yesterday when his daughter, Amrita Devi, walked away with a degree in management and economics from the University of Fiji.

Mr Raj was impressed with the hard work his daughter had put in knowing full well that it took a lot of sacrifice on their part as parents to give her the opportunity to study at tertiary level.

“The whole family is proud of her achievement, it is one thing to provide for your child to study and it is another thing when that same child makes use of the resources provided to reach greater heights,” Mr Kumar said.

“Amrita has shown that she could balance both her family life and school life which is indeed a joyous moment for me as a parent.”

Mr Kumar, who farms sugarcane along the Vuda Back Road, was among the many parents who attended the graduation at the dining hall at the Saweni campus near Lautoka.

He said seeing his daughter graduate yesterday was one of the happiest days of his life.

“My hard work as a farmer has finally paid off,” Mr Kumar said.

“I remember how I as a father had to prioritise my daughter’s education which has finally paid off. The fruit of hard work is always sweet.”

He said his daughter was a hardworking child from the beginning and given the circumstances she went through, it was overall a  proud moment for the family.
