Three foreshore villages in Cakaudrove are earmarked for relocation to higher grounds after the villages were badly affected by storm surges during Cyclone Winston.

Nukubalavu, Naweni and Nacekoro have been identified to relocate soon.

Commissioner Northern Jovesa Vocea said the relocation of coastal villages is not an easy task as it involves many Government stakeholders.

“Firstly it needs the consent of the people and it is a very lengthy process as 60 per cent of all villagers must agree to relocate,” Mr Vocea said.

He said the land system in Fiji was also very complicated and the Government could not relocate them in just two weeks.

Meanwhile it is understood that Nacekoro Village headman Leone Kulanikoro had identified a piece of land on higher land that is owned by J Hunter Pearls.

Mr Kulanikoro said Mr Hunter was selling the seven-acre piece of land for $360,000.

Mr Vocea has asked the Cakaudrove provincial administrator to come up with all the necessary information and check if there was a valuation carried out on the land.
