Fifty-nine students were  joined by family and friends to celebrate their graduation from the Australian Pacific Technical College (APTC) at Novotel Nadi last Friday.

Josaia Dau, 45, a native of Ovalau, was among those awarded with qualifications in the 15 programmes.

He completed Certificate III in Engineering Mechanical Trade (Fitting and Machining).

He has been working for the Fiji Sugar Corporation’s Rarawai Mill in Ba as an apprentice in the Welding and Fabrication Department.

Late last year he decided to go back to school despite his age and circumstances.

“The quality of study at APTC was tremendous and with the support of the trainers we were able to graduate. The programme was for six months and now I can go back and work in the field where I want to work in.”

Award-winning international food and travel writer and professional chef Lance Seeto, who was the chief guest, said, “You are now the next generation; you are the future, and how do you want to leave your legacy? You can now effect change.”

APTC is an innovative development project funded by the Australian Government, delivering Australian-standard skills and qualifications for a wide range of vocational careers for skilled workers across the Pacific.

Since its establishment, the college has graduated more than 2840 Fijian citizens with Australian-standard qualifications.
