Archer Robert Elder will travel to Thailand in two weeks time and to take a re-shoot in order to book his Olympic Games spot in August.

Team Fiji chef de mission Cathy Wong confirmed to SUNsports yesterday that Elder has yet to qualify for Rio and would be confirmed after his participation in Thailand. Elder won a gold medal in the Oceania Championship which was held in Tonga on April 14.

“Robert has shot the intense minimum qualification system, he now has to go to Thailand which is in two weeks time where he actually can re-shoot and qualify,” Wong said.

Other Fijian athlete who is close to qualify is judoka Josateki Naulu.

“Josateki is sitting very well as far as the qualification process is concerned. He has 473 points while the other judoka from New Zealand is in second place with 270 points and if Josateki continues to perform at this level then he will qualify on merit,” Wong added.

Following the devastation of Cyclone Winston, Wong says they have decided collectively to reduce their preparation budget.

“We asked the sports federations to reduce preparation budget and I’m very proud to say that everyone in the team have reduced their preparation budget by percentage. We do not want to put burden on our athletes.

“Right now we are fine tuning our online accreditation for our athletes and the deadline for that is April 29- the section managers will be working very hard to see that the right information is uploaded.”

Wong said their main focus now is to get those athletes that have yet to qualify to qualify for the Olympic Games.
