Fiji’s High Commissioner to Singapore Ratu Seremaia Tui Cavuilati and Ministry of Agriculture Permanent Secretary, Jitendra Singh met with senior officials of the Singapore Agri – Food and Veterinary Authority to discuss opportunities for Fiji to start exporting fresh and processed agriculture and fisheries commodities to Singapore.

The Singapore Agri – Food and Veterinary Authority led by Dr Anna Wong, the director Quarantine Department met with the Government delegation and held discussions on likely products to be exported and quarantine regulations and requirements to be met by Fijian exporters among other areas.

Commodities discussed as highly likely to be exported include fresh papaya, pineapples, fresh and processed ginger, fresh and processed coconut products and fresh fish and marine products.

Mr Singh said during the meeting Fijian farmers, fisherman and exporters now have the opportunity for a new market in light of recent direct flights by Fiji Airways to Singapore.

The Fijian delegation will be meeting food importers in Singapore with a view of enticing them to source certain food products from Fiji.

With a population of 5.5 million people, lack of domestic food production, a vibrant food culture and now direct flights from Nadi places Singapore and the greater South East Asia markets as having great potential for Fijian products.
