The welfare of the Fijian soldiers on peacekeeping duties has been prioritised.

Commander Humphrey Tawake, the man in charge of Republic of Fiji Military Force’s peacekeeping operations, said the roles and responsibilities of United Nations peacekeeping operations continued to expand.

He also said the challenge now was to make them sustainable with the limited available financial and human resources, while maintaining their functionality.

In 2014 he said their field allowances were increased. Now he says they had to look at improving their equipment.

The arrival of Russian weapons, he said, was a boost to the RFMF peacekeepers.

The next rotation to the Golan Heights according to Commander Tawake will see soldiers armed with the Russian weapons.

He said the current weapons used were outdated.

Soldiers had been reminded to stay fit all the time and be healthy.

Fiji’s next peacekeeping rotation, according to Commander Tawake, will be to the Sinai and they will be leaving on May 4.
