The Alvin Singh captained- Vodafone Fijian Under-23 team left for Brazil last night without striker Saula Waqa. Waqa fractured his leg while playing for Ba in the Vodafone Premier League clash against the Regional Academy side last Sunday.

Fijian U23 coach Frank Farina confirmed Waqa’s injury as they checked in at the Nadi International Airport.

“He will be out of action for at least two months,” Farina said.

“It is a setback for him and for the national teams as well. He is one of the players I had since the Under-20 and it is unfortunate. There is no way he could travel with the team and we have to go to Brazil with only twenty-one players.”

Singh said despite the setback they are optimistic of achieving their objectives.

“We are looking forward going to Brazil which is another football country. As they are the host country of the Rio Olympics; and it is going to be a good challenge for us.

“For Brazilians their bread and butter is soccer, this will assist in our preparation,” he added.
