World Health Organisation and International Olympic Committee assures

Team Fiji is safe from the possible effects of the Zika virus on our athletes taking part in the Rio Olympics.

This was the assurance from the World Health Organisation and International Olympic Committee to the Government.

Minister of Youth and Sport, Laisenia Tuitubou said in Parliament on Monday that the effective control of mosquitoes was the most important means to stop transmission.

“For its part, the International Olympic is confident Brazil with the aid of WHO can handle Zika,” Tuitubou said.

“Olympic organisers in Rio say they (Team Fiji) are following WHO recommendations; organisers and city officials say that games venues and major tourist attractions will be inspected daily during the games.

“We welcome the action taken by WHO to deal with this issue and they (Team Fiji) will remain in close contact with them (WHO) and are following their guidance,” he said.

Tuitubou said the health and safety of Team Fiji was paramount. He said inspection of game venues in Rio would be conducted by Olympic officials during the games from August 5- 21.

“The Chef-de-Mission of Team Fiji has already attended the meeting that took place in Rio in late 2015 and Zika virus was not a concern that time; on the assumption that the Zika virus in Fiji is similar to the Zika virus in Rio; athletes and the players are taking such precautions,” he said.

“The participating nations for Olympic and Paralympic Games are taking a similar action in relation to the Zika virus.

“Consideration has been given to the severity of the Zika virus in South America and its possible effect on our athletes in Rio Olympics is negligible.”
