Disease concerns for Winston devastated areas.

The prevalence of Zika, Dengue and Chikungunyna in areas devastated by Tropical Cyclone Winston is  now a major concern for the  Ministry of Health and Medical Services.

So far there have been 13 confirmed cases of Zika in the country.

Minister for Health and Medical Services Jone Usamate said they would work with the Ministry for Local Government and other institutions to organise clean-up campaigns.

“We urge everyone to take proactive steps to clean up and make sure that we destroy mosquito breeding places, especially now that we still are in the dengue season, in the Chikungunyna season and now we have cases of Zika in the country which is a great concern to us,” he said.

Mr Usamate said the environmental health team had looked at the provision of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) kits distributed in affected areas.

“Health assesments, vector surveillance and spraying works had also been conducted within affected sub-divisions; we also have teams doing the spraying of mosquitoes to make sure that we can contain them all around the country,” he said.

Mr Usamate said according to the latest information he had received there was between 95 to 100 per cent coverage for assesments, surveillance and spraying works within all settlements and villages that had been carried around Fiji.
