Government believes due process was followed in the appointment of Yamena Yauvoli as the director-general of the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG).

Minister for Foreign Affairs Ratu Inoke Kubuabola was responding to a statement by SODELPA board chairperson Anare Jale.

Mr Jale questioned whether due process was followed because of what he described as “cracks” appearing in MSG. He was referring to the position of Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu calling for a review of the selection process. He said Fiji should withdraw Mr Yauvoli’s candidature because of the mounting MSG debt and revisit the whole process again.

Ratu Inoke said due process was followed when MSG chair Solomons Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare made the appointment as allowed for in the MSG agreement.

“Ambassador Yauvoli continues to receive the full endorsement of the Fijian Government for his appointment to lead the MSG Secretariat,” he said.

“The Fijian Government believes good sense, in true Melanesian solidarity, will prevail, when the MSG leaders meet at the end of this month. It also believes the robust debate on the candidature of Ambassador Yauvoli is conducive to strengthening ties in the MSG.

“As to the issue of the financial situation of the MSG Secretariat, the Fijian Government has consistently called for transparency and due diligence in the administration of the secretariat.

“At the MSG Leaders Meeting in Port Vila, Vanuatu, in October last year, the Fijian Government called for the MSG Secretariat to live and work ‘within its means,’ to protect the integrity and credibility of the organisation. The Fijian Government is fully convinced with Ambassador Yauvoli’s credentials to help the MSG achieve these objectives.”
