Clustered farming is the best way forward for rural agriculture development, says Minister for Agriculture Inia Seruiratu.

Speaking during his visit to Unik Tropical Export – the producer and exporter of Fijian-produced vegetable and sea-foods in Nadi earlier this week, Mr Seruiratu said working in isolation had not achieved the desired results for years.

“Farmers need to work together and plant in an organised manner for specific markets that have been identified.

“This will help in production and also contribution to the value chain from land preparation, planting, harvesting and right through to marketing,’’ he said.

“We support this type of farming and urge farmers to vigorously pursue integrated agriculture practices.”

Mr Seruiratu said Unik Tropical Export had identified markets but getting farmers together to supply for the market and maintain consistency was very important.

Unik Tropical Export director and manager Dhirendra Nath said he had also identified farmers who would supply vegetables and crops for export and also local markets.

Mr Nath said he would work closely with these farmers to get the best produce across and maintain consistency in the long run.
