Formation of this document will help us with research:  Acting CEO Prakash

The Sugar Research Institute of Fiji (SRIF) will launch its first strategic plan in July this year.

This was revealed by SRIF acting chief executive officer, Sanjay Prakash, while making submissions to the Standing Committee on Economic Affairs yesterday.

He said vigorous consultation programmes was held to develop this important document.

“Programmes had been developed; taking it through all the various stakeholders, our partners, FSC and the Government, NGOs and farmers.

“The overseas training we attended and the various other programmes had assisted us with the formation of this strategic plan and this document will help us with research,” he said.

Mr Prakash said the strategic plan addressed some of the key issues currently faced by the industry like weed control, pest and disease management, setting up international benchmarks, technology transfer programmes, local/international collaborations and economics of sugar cane farming.

However, he said one of the key areas that needed attention was harvesting and transport which cost around 60 per cent of the production cost.

“Given the continuous challenges in the sugarcane industry, Fiji needs SRIF even more now and the chances of making the sugar industry commercially viable and sustainable will depend on a strong and viable SRIF,” he said.
