The Nadogo football team won their Vodafone Senior League Northern Zone opener 2-1 against Taveuni at Subrail Park, Labasa on Friday night.

Taveuni started on a high note when Keni Drauna drew first blood in the 28th minute. Trailing 0-1 at the break, a fire-up Nadogo side came out in full force in the second spell.

They pressured the Taveuni defence into errors and in the 73rd minute, Tubeni Tanivulavula scored Nadogo’s equaliser.

Sensing victory, continuous pressure saw Nadogo extend their lead in the 76th minute through a Francis Catarogo strike.

Nadogo Football secretary Nalvindra Pratap said they are happy with their players’ performance.

“We came as underdog, prove our worth and we have done it,” Pratap said.

“We are grateful to our fans who had travelled long distances just to support our team.”

Taveuni Football president James Kumar said they did not train together but managed to work as a unit and score a goal.

“Eleven of our players have been busy rebuilding their houses which were destroyed by Cyclone Winston,” he said.

“Most of our players are farmers and they are struggling to rebuild their lives while others are in Labasa busy working.

“Since it is impossible for us to train together, we saw no need to have a coach. Although we lost by a goal, I’m happy with the players’ performance.”
