An article in the Fiji Times yesterday about civil service jobs has caused undue panic among civil servants, says Member of Parliament (MP) Ashneel Sudhakar.

He said: “The Fiji Times article, “Civil Service jobs to be readvertised: intake on merit” on May 12, 2016 contains numerous factual errors and misattributes numerous quotations to myself that misrepresent Government’s reform of the Civil Service.

“The reporter, Mr Nasik Swami, incorrectly asserts that I stated that more than 30,000 civil service positions will be readvertised and that those employees must then reapply for their jobs. However, I never made any statement to that effect,” he said.

“My comments to Mr Swami were exclusively regarding the new open merit-based criteria that any new applicants must meet when seeking to fill vacant positions in the Civil Service. I made no comment on the readvertising of any positions currently held by civil servants, as that is not the plan of the Ministry of Civil Service.

“The reporter also incorrectly asserted that three options would be offered to civil servants who did not meet merit based criteria. These options, “phasing out or retirement, replacement of those appointments without merit and transfer within ministries”, were never a part of my discussions with Mr Swami and I never made any statements to this effect.

“This highly irresponsible reporting by the Fiji Times has caused undue panic among civil servants and is a blatant attempt to undermine the good work Government is doing to reform the Civil Service and empower our public servants.

“An immediate retraction should be issued clarifying these errors to prevent the proliferation of misinformation and a further disservice to the Fiji Times readership.” Government MP Ashneel Sudhakar
