The Rahul Krishna-captained Nadi side ended their 15-year winless jinx to capture the Super Premier title in the Vodafone Then India Valibar Sangam (TIV) Football Championship at Prince Charles Park, Nadi yesterday.

Striker Samuel Nair scored twice (2-0) to beat  newly promoted Saweni (Lautoka) in front of the 3000 soccer fans

Nair struck twice in a space of four minutes.  His first goal in the 56th minute  was a result of a free kick from Ravi Naicker.

In the 60th minute he beat goalkeeper Divnesh Nandan to seal the win.

Nadi coach Aman Kumar said it was historic to win the silverware after 15 years.

“I applaud the boy for their effort, it has been a long wait,” he said.

Saweni had the services of the Naicker brothers including Andrew (Nadi FA rep), elder brother Joel, Edward and youngest Aaron.

Saweni captain Avneel Krishna was  gracious in defeat.

“It was a good tournament, this is our first time taking part in the Super Premier but luck was not on our side,” he said.

Saweni caused the major upset of the championship to send defending champion Suva 1-0 packing in the semi-final while Nadi defeated Malolo 1-0.

In the premier grade Nadroga beat Rewa 2-0 while in the semi-final Rewa 1-0 Sabeto, and Nadroga 2-0 Vuda.

In the Veterans, Solovi Masters hammered defending champion Sydney Masters 3-0.

In the semi-final, defending champions Sydney edged Queensland 7-6 (pen) while Solovi edged Nadi 1-0.
