Family and close friends could not get over their loss as Vinod Patel regional manager Salesh Chand was cremated yesterday at the Dignified Crematorium in Nakasi.

“I am speechless by seeing the casket of my brother. He was so close to me that I really don’t know how I can cope up without his support,” said Gyan Chand the younger brother of Salesh was in tears.

Mr Chand was among relatives and friends who attended the last rites and paid their final respects to the 42-year-old.

Another friend Ashok Kumar, a traditional Hindu singer (Bhajan), said Mr Chand was a very down to earth person.

“I have known him for a long time now and it is heart breaking to see his remains here today,” Mr Kumar said.

“I just wish and pray to God that whoever did this crime can be taken to task as soon as possible.”

A post mortem examination was conducted on the remains of the body found in the car but the cause of death could not be established. Mr Chand had arrived home in Lautoka last Tuesday after working in Rakiraki for a week and told his wife Ranjini Devi that he was going out.

That was the last time Ms Devi saw him alive. At about 2.45 am on Wednesday Police found Mr Chand’s company vehicle at the Fiji Sugar Corporation Lautoka Mill full yard, completely burnt. Charred remains of Mr Chand were found in the car.

Police are now treating the case as murder based on the positive identification of items found on the victim by his wife.

A team of investigators led by the head of Crime in Lautoka is currently following some leads as investigations continue.
