Pacific Youths Discuss Policy Dynamics

The resident co-ordinator of the United Nations Development Programme Osnat Lubrani has stressed that youth policies need to be prioritised within national development plans and adequately resourced.

While speaking to the youth participants at the Evidence-based Policies on Youth Development in the Pacific workshop at Hotel Novotel Nadi yesterday, Ms Lubrani said that this was the right time to discuss the current status of national youth policies and efforts in the Pacific region to empower and advance youth.

 

Importance

“This is important not only for the sake of the people, but for the sake of successful development of Pacific countries,” Ms Lubrani said.

She encouraged the youths who are representing their island nations to engage themselves in the three day workshop to focus on the pragmatic angle of the workshop.

“If we are to succeed in getting youth policies right, it is crucial for young women and men to be themselves engage as partners in shaping policies and monitoring implementation,” she said.

The workshop focuses on evidence based policy making strategy with the use of best available data, research and information on results and programmes implemented to guide and mainly inform all stages of the policy process.

During his opening speech at the workshop Minister for Youth and Sports, Laisenia Tuitubou said the workshop’s main focus was to strengthen youth policy formulation, monitoring and evaluati on.
