Early this month a group of students from various schools in China and Hong Kong together with their parents visited their adopted school, Yasawa High School.

This group of students made a donation to the PM’s Cyclone Relief and Rehabilitation Fund of $659,343 which was the largest amount ever donated in the Yasawas for the re-building of a school.

Fijian-born Michelle Lee, who is a Grade Three student at the Western Academy of Beijing High School, said they enjoyed and shared some of their interesting views of Fiji, especially the Yasawa High School.

“The Fiji air is so clean and the snorkeling was great…and I hope that I could come back and help the children in the school and village with English. I know I am a Fijian and I could help others…I just know that I have to work hard,” she said.

“The most striking feature or experience from Fiji I would personally have to say would be the people; everyone treats each other with respect and conduct themselves in a manner that I have not seen anywhere else in the world…. this really intrigued me and made the trip all the more memorable,” student Jerry Wu said.

Grade Nine student Johanna Jakobi said: “Fiji is where people know happiness, where no matter what happens, they pick themselves up with a smile on their face.”

Grade 10 student Sean Bai said: “It was so refreshing to see how friendly the people in Fiji are. I hope that the students of Yasawa can access clean drinking water all the time.”

The group was part an official entourage with Ministry of Education officials and the Commissioner Western’s office. They were accorded a traditional Fijian ceremony of welcome.

Yasawa High School principal Waliki Nasau thanked the group and expressed an interest for the Chinese language to be taught at the school.

The students spent a week in Fiji sponsored by leading tourism operators including Tour Managers Fiji, Grand Pacific Hotel, Yatule Spa and Resort, South Sea Cruises, Sheraton Fiji, BLK and Fiji Airways.
