The leaders and communities in the Island of Bau in Tailevu province have been challenged to become champions of violence free communities in Fiji.

This has transpired through last week’s visit to Bau Island by the Permanent Secretary for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Josefa Koroivueta.

He highlighted the need for a shared responsibility to effectively address issues like domestic violence and child abuse.

“As a ministry, we are often haunted day in and day out of cases about elderly people who are neglected by their families, who are left to toil the streets of Suva and other urban centres.

“Even women and children have been neglected in their very homes. And in most cases, the perpetrators who commit horrendous acts are known to the victims.

“Today, I would like to appeal to each one of you here, to stand up and actively fight the violence against women and children. We need to work together and create communities that nurture the values of care and respect for our women and children, as strong families are the foundation for a prosperous nation.”
