The Methodist Church says SODELPA party leader Sitiveni Rabuka can preach as a lay preacher.

The church’s general secretary, Reverend Doctor Epineri Vakadewavosa, made the clarification last night after Mr Rabuka said he was still waiting to get official clearance.

Rev Vakadewavosa said lay preachers like Mr Rabuka could preach. He said they were free to take part in politics.

But ordained ministers and stewards would have to step down if they wanted to stand as election candidates.

He said the church was still neutral when it came to politics.

“The Church is free from politics, we are not for any political party because it’s a political society we live in, the role of the church is to minister the word of God to the people, we aren’t bound by any political party,” Reverend Vakadewavosa said.

He said Mr Rabuka was free to stand for elections.

“We wish him the very best in his new role as SODELPA leader and we hope that he will carry out that role with dignity. This is an important role,” he said.

Reverend Vakadewavosa said Mr Rabuka had been an active member of the church when he was with Republic of the Fiji Military Forces and when he became  Prime Minister. Mr Rabuka said lay preachers had been told that it was better for them not to preach if they were tempted to give political messages from the pulpit.

He said he would accept any church decision.
