The National Fire Authority (NFA) advises home owners to be mindful of fire safety at home when using mosquito coils, candles, prayer diyas and other fire ignition sources.

NFA chief fire officer Qionilau Moceitai urged home owners to take extra care and avoid unnecessary home fires.

“Home owners must ensure that candles, prayer diyas, mosquito coils and other fire ignition sources are placed away from the fabric materials like curtains, underneath the bed or sofa,” Mr Moceitai said.

“Candles and mosquito coils have caused home fires and we don’t want any family to lose their homes.”

Candle fire safety

Use candle holders that are sturdy and won’t tip over easily.

Put candle holders on a sturdy, uncluttered surface.

Don’t burn a candle all the way down — put it out before it gets too close to the holder.

Put candles at a place which is visible to you and other adult family members and should never be left unattended.

Blow out candles when you leave the room or go to sleep.

Mosquito coil

Place mosquito coil on a metal surface.

Never place a mosquito coil on newspapers

Never place mosquito coils underneath beds, sofas and fabric materials

Put out mosquito coil before going to bed or leaving home
