Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama presented new gym equipment to the Saunaka Rugby Club in Nadi yesterday.

Bainimarama said the renovation cost $38,970 and $12,35O for the purchase of the new equipment.

“The new gym will encourage healthy lifestyles, cultivate athletic talent and build Saunaka Village’s already impressive athletic legacy,” he said.

“And another big step in bringing the services and infrastructure in our rural areas up to the same standard that can be found in our urban centres.

“For our young people, sport is a great teaching tool in developing teamwork, skills, perseverance, personal responsibility, fair play, tactical thinking and problem solving. “Sports and team environments give your young people a sense of purpose and belonging and those are benefits that you really cannot put a price on.”

Saunaka Rugby Club chairman Ratu Ponijese Rayasi said the objective was to try and develop more rugby players to represent Fiji.

“The villagers of Saunaka are very happy we have a new gym,” he said,

“Our youths always travel to NASA High Performance Unit (HPU) in Namaka for training.

“Saunaka has nurtured and groomed ordinary village boys into national reps with some securing lucrative rugby contracts overseas.”

He said prominent players from Saunaka who played for Fiji are Sovau brothers Jona, Josateki, Taniela Ralumu, Laisenia Kato, Ilaisa Saukuru and Rasolosolo Bogisa and current national 7s rep Vatemo Ravouvou.
