A one-year-old boy is battling for his life at the Lautoka Hospital after sustaining critical injuries from a late night car accident in Natabua, Lautoka ,on Saturday.

This after the vehicle he was travelling in veered off the road and landed in a drain apparently due to driver fatigue.

Police director traffic control Senior Superintendent Mahesh Mishra said: “The victim was traveling in a vehicle with both his parents last night after 11pm along the Queens Road near Natabua, when it is alleged his mother who was driving at the time fell off to sleep resulting in the vehicle veering off the road and landing in a drain.

He said both parents were admitted for observation in stable condition while their son is in critical condition.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed the family of three from Tamavua in Suva remained admitted at the Lautoka Hospital.

Meanwhile, Mr Mishra has reminded motorists to take heed of the fact that driver fatigue is a serious safety threat.

“Drivers must be mindful of the need to always get adequate rest so that accidents such as this can be avoided. If you feel you’ve had a long day and are feeling fatigued, then don’t risk getting in the driver’s seat as it could affect your driving.

“We believe driver fatigue is often underestimated.

“However it is better to be safe then putting yourself and others safety at risk because some tend to fight the urge to rest and decide to travel instead,” Mr Mishra said. Edited by Naisa Koroi
