A truck hired to transport goods to a supermarket in Ba caught fire on Friday at Raviravi, burning and the foodstuff it carried.

The truck, belonging to Premier Transport, was coming from Flour Mills of Fiji with sacks of flour, and cartons of Chow Noodles, cookies, breakfast crackers and rice.

Driver Summit Sharma said he had just passed the St Anthony’s Catholic Church on Friday when the right back tyres burst.

“It was so quick the way everything happened,” Mr Sharma said.

“From where the tyre blew to where I parked the truck must have been about 150 metres,” he said.

“The damaged tyre started to rub against the tray and the side curtains, which are vinyl, soon caught fire.”

He said within minutes the whole back of the truck was ablaze.

The vinyl was quick to burn and this caused the fire to spread quickly and engulf the entire back portion and its contents, he said.

Mr Sharma was travelling with three other fellow workers.

The National Fire Authority from Ba arrived and helped extinguish the fire, but by then most of the back portion of the truck had been burnt.

Police are investigating.
