Team Fiji swimming coach, Sharon Smith is busy trying to work her way around the Olympic Games competition time schedules.

For the schedules the heats will be at 1pm and the finals are expected to be staged from 10pm to midnight (Rio time). As a former Olympic swimmer Smith believes it is a huge adjustment for them.

“Our main focus now is trying to get the time difference going, we need to adjust our body clock,” she said.

“It’s different from all other Olympics and every other competition that I have been to. The heats are at 1pm opposed to the 10am we normally have. We have to change our sleeping pattern, going to bed at midnight and waking up having our breakfast at 8am and go to the pools at 12pm for warm-up and heats start at 1pm.” She said this is a huge challenge for them but they are going to work on it today.

Malani joins camp

The Nabukadra, Nakorotubu native Meli Malani joined the Team Fiji contingent yesterday.

“We now have a complete team. The pool is a very fast pool in good condition and good temperature, got a few nerves there with Matelita and Meli but so far so good,” Smith added.

“We finding it really good, the jet-lag is a little bit there but we are keeping ourselves busy.”

The Fijian swimmers also visited the competition venue for the first time.

“We went out at 9.30am and did a couple of sessions at the competition venue and again at 6pm. Facilities are good, it was a 12-minute bus ride to the venue. The bus comes on time and it’s even a walking distance from the games village so we are enjoying it.”
