Our Team Fiji women’s rugby sevens team are the underdogs of the Rio Olympic Games women’s rugby competition. Being new to such competitive environment their training together with the men’s team has somewhat boosted their morale and has lifted their confidence level.

For one of the strengths of the Chris Cracknell coached-side is that most of the top teams would be underrating them. So expect them to launch their attack on the Olympic gold medal under the radar that suits them fine.

Here at the Santiago camp the girls are giving their all in training and leaving no stones unturned in their preparation with skipper Ana Maria Roqica calling the shots.

A look into their eyes says it all- they are ready. Nothing cocky or fancy about their nature, but they are on a mission and up for what it takes.

They may not hit Rio as favourites, but one thing is for sure, win or lose in the Olympics they will definitely put women’s rugby on the map, their style and sheer talent is untapped.

Flash forward one week from now the girls will be in day 2 of the Olympics and our first shot at history. The intensity of life is increasing, but the surprisingly good aspect of that is so too is the enjoyment.

Both our men and women squads have given their all on the training field, then on the bus home they are singing and joking with each other as if we are cruising up the Coral Coast to a family reunion.

In this world of over analysing and statistics, this normality and island way of life is refreshing in professional sport and one of our secrets in my book, as switching off is almost more vital to get you ready to be able to switch on when it matters. We are also the world champions in the world of relaxation too, so the underrated thing called balance makes us even more potent.
