Teenager Mikaele Racika aims to take Fiji’s aviation industry to another level after completing his studies in China.

The former student of Natabua High School in Lautoka was awarded a five-year scholarship to study a Bachelor of Aeronautics Engineering at Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics in China.

He was among 12 students who received their scholarship letters of acceptance at the Chinese Embassy in Suva yesterday.

The course covers the basic principles of aerospace technology including aerodynamics, thermodynamics, stress analysis, mechanics, etc.

Minister for Education and Heritage, Mahendra Reddy reminded students to work hard while studying in China.

“You are ambassadors of Fiji through that scholarship and keep in mind that your academic records are the reasons why you have been chosen.

“Don’t let any challenges stop you from completing your studies, we are always here to support you,” he said.

Young Racika said it had always been his childhood dream to become an aeronautical engineer.

“I was fascinated by the science of aerospace and flying,” he said.

“My grandfather, who is currently a lecturer in the area of aircraft engineering at Fiji National University, has been my mentor.

“After I complete studies, I will come back and share my knowledge and contribute to the aviation industry which will boost Fiji’s economy.”

The Naitasiri lad said they would study the Chinese language and culture for a year.

“To study this course in China comes with a lot of competition and challenges, but if you are focused and work hard than nothing is impossible,” he said.

“My advice to young people is not to give up on their dreams, sometimes you will come across challenging situations in life, but that should not stop us from achieving our dreams.

“I want to thank the Fijian Government, Chinese Embassy and the Chinese Community in Fiji for the scholarship.”

His mother, Seini Racika was in tears as she described her joy for Mikaele’s achievement.

“My son deserves this scholarship because he was hard working, even though he was also involved in sports and other activities but his study was always a priority,” she said.
