One of the star attractions of Team Fiji’s presence at yesterday’s opening ceremony of the Rio Olympic Games was their uniforms.

Flag bearer Osea Kolinisau’s traditional attire attracted USA top tennis player Serena Williams. She took a photo with our national men’s rugby sevens captain and posted it on Snapchat.

In her Facebook, swimmer Matelita Buadromo said that USA women sprinters Allyson Felix and English Gardner complemented on the uniforms and even asked for her pins.

OTHER ATTRACTION

Of 207 athletes carrying their country’s flag one that stood out during the opening ceremony was Tonga’s Pita Nikolas Taufatofua.  He drew a massive cheer as he entered the Maracana stadium bare-chested and wearing nothing but a ta’ovala (Tongan mat) and a lot of oil on his torso.

Taufatofua, who was born in Australia but grew up in Tonga, is Tonga’s first Olympic taekwondo athlete.
