A family mourning the death of their three-year-old son yesterday applauded the Minister for Health Jone Usamate for braving the rain to attend their beloved’s funeral service.

Ratu Meli Niumataiwalu whose death is currently being investigated by the Ministry of Health following claims that he was prescribed Panadol by a doctor after a double washtub fell on him.

Mr Usamate said he had ordered an investigation and it was ongoing.

“We have to find our side of the story and if people are not satisfied with services carried out then they are welcomed to raise their concerns to the Ministry,” Mr Usamate said.

“We are determined to find the cause of death and I am yet to read the pathology’s report which is an important document in this investigation.

“There is a procedure in place which we will follow if the medical officer is found guilty of the claims.”

Ratu Meli’s father Waisea Raiqiso said he appreciated Mr Usamate’s presence at his son’s funeral.

“I am satisfied that the Government is taking action towards this and we are honoured to have the Minister here with us,” Mr Raiqiso said.

Ratu Meli Niumataiwalu of the chiefly family in Wailevu Village in Labasa was laid to rest at the village cemetery which is next to the family home.
