Hussain Tells Of His Dream
He would close his eyes and dream that he was playing in an international golf tournament. A young Abid Hussain (pictured) would then lift the guava stick he was carrying and hit the golf ball as hard as he could.
From that humble beginning at the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) Labasa golf link, Hussain is now one of the finest golfers in the country.
“It all started with a dream,” he said. “I grew up watching the game and any free chance I got I would run down to the golf link.”
The 41-year-old who grew up at “Baigan Vanua” which is situated close to the FSC golf link in Labasa said once he knew he had the passion to play golf, he went after it.
“I never let anything stop me and I was fortunate enough because I witnessed lots of tournaments and became acquainted with most of the players.
“They taught me the basics to golf and I would closely observe how they went on with the game.”
Hussain who officially began playing the sport at 18 said he had won his first tournament which boosted his spirit to continue.
“I just kept playing to develop my skills and I am still doing that,” he said.
“I am currently preparing for the Fiji International in October and I continue to learn in every step.”
The owner of Hussain Transport Services said whatever the commitment; he always made time for golf.
Hussain’s has represented Team Fiji at the Pacific Games and other international tournaments as well.
