$40k For Young Netters
The Fijian National Sports Commission presented $40,000 to the Fijian Netball Under-21 side yesterday.
The Vicki Wilson-coached side depart on Saturday for the Oceania Netball World Youth qualifiers in Auckland, New Zealand next week.
Commission chairman Peter Mazey confirmed the fund is for preparation and travelling grants.
“We are glad to be allocating the first grant for the first fiscal year,” Mazey said.
Wilson said the 13 players selected should be the best to compete with the best in the Oceania regions.
“We had a solid week of training with the girls.
“I watched them closely, I looked at their effort, attitude, fitness and skills level,”she said.
“I’m proud of them and I know that they will wear the uniform with pride in trying their best.”
Wilson has secured the services of Fijian Pearls defender Episake Kahatoka who will lead the side and former national basketball rep Vilisi Tavui.
Making it to the top two is Wilson’s target in order for them to book a spot for the 2017 World Youth Championships in Botswana.
“We need to make sure to qualify and for that we need to be in the top 2.
“Going to Botswana is very important, so the 13 players I have selected are ready for next week’s competition.”
Wilson is calling on members of the public to support the girls.
“Get behind your team, your support will make a difference to them as this is a wonderful opportunity for the girls.”
