Friends Of Fugitive Want Him Arrested
A Nasinu couple who befriended alleged fugitive, Avinesh Kumar Raj, years ago want him to turn himself in.
Raj who has been described by his alleged victims as a master of deception is still on the run as Police continue to look for him.
The couple, residing in Makoi, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said they had known the Raj for years but were not aware of his alleged dark side.
“We never knew Avinesh until he came to Suva looking for us and we took him into our home as he claimed there was no one to take care of him,” the couple said.
They said they were called by St Giles Hospital in Suva to take him home after he was discharged from the hospital a couple of years ago.
“We got him home and the whole night he was staring and telling us stories which did not make any sense to us.
“The next morning when we woke up, Raj was gone and a few of our items were missing too.”
The couple said they were not aware what Raj was allegedly up to until they found out in the news.
They said they were not aware of his alleged criminal activities – from rape to deception.
“One time we had got him bailed for $500 as he was arrested for obtaining financial advantage by deception in 2014.
“After we bailed him, we thought he would change his ways but unfortunately he made things worse for himself.
“We did not hear from him for many months and we do not wish to be in contact with him either,” the couple said.
They said if they were contacted by Raj, they would call the Police and have him arrested.
They said they do not want a criminal who is wanted by the Police to be out walking free.
“We have decided that if he shows up at our house or calls us, we will definitely call the Police.”
Meanwhile, Police spokesperson, Ana Naisoro has assured families of alleged victims that all efforts were being made to find Raj.
A special team had been tasked to do so, Ms Naisoro said.
“Our officers are doing all they can and the decision to refer him to St Giles Hospital in Suva for evaluation was done as he was harming himself during the interview process following his arrest,” Ms Naisoro said.
Raj is also known as Vinesh Kumar Raj.
He is wanted for alleged three rape cases and a bench warrant for cases of obtaining advantage by deception.
He escaped from the custody of St Giles Hospital in Suva on September 9.
