Three Acquitted Of Rape Charges
The three men who were charged with one count each of rape were acquitted of all charges at the High Court in Suva yesterday.
Jonacani Ciritabua, Sefton Tupou and serving prisoner Tevita Qaqanivalu appeared before Judge Justice Achala Wengappuli.
Justice Wengappuli told the court that there were a lot of inconsistencies in the victim’s evidence and that there were no evidence given by the victim which identified the three accused.
He also added that no one had witnessed the incident apart from the victim who said he was raped.
Defence lawyer Priya Lal represented Ciritabua while Qaqanivalu and Tupou represented themselves.
It was alleged that on November 2, 2012, a 28-year-old inmate was allegedly raped with a broom stick in the Suva Corrections Centre.
