More than 3000 students of the Fiji National University voted during the student association elections yesterday.

The polls were held at the four campuses namely Pasifika Campus, School of Nursing (Tamavua), Labasa Campus and Koronivia. The Fijian Elections Office helped conduct the polls.

There are 15 positions in contention for the FNU Student Association Council.

Returning Office of the Fiji National University Student Association Election, Mesake Dawai, said between 8am and 10am, only 120 votes were cast when time-off from classes were given to students.

“120 votes were the total votes in the two hours from all four polling stations. We are assisting FNU in conducting the elections.”

Mr Dawai said the elections were financed by the Fijian Elections Office, which is budgeted between $10,000 and $20,000.

As of yesterday afternoon at least 550 votes were cast.

“For me casting my vote is very important and I’m voting for someone who will address the issues of the students and not take sides,” said second year public health student, Luke Baleinabuli.

Voting closed at 8pm last night. Counting will start today from 8am at the Derrick Campus in Samabula, Suva. It is expected to be completed by 2pm.
