Assistant Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Veena Bhatnagar is urging people to forgive ex-offenders and recognise their contribution in society.

Forgiveness she said was a key virtue of life that every religion in this world promoted.

“Many times in keeping up with the expectations of our culture and society, we tend to ignore this virtue, especially when it comes to giving a prisoner, normally stigmatised, a second chance,” she said.

Ms Bhatnagar made the remarks at the opening of the Fiji Corrections Service Wives and Mothers Cultural Show at Sukuna Park in Suva, yesterday.

“We need to come together to recognise and applaud the efforts of individuals who have succeeded in their rehabilitation journey.

“We also are here today to thank key partners of the Yellow Ribbon project for their continued support,” she said.

Ms Bhatnagar said the Yellow Ribbon was an important symbol of acceptance and the offer of a second chance to ex-offenders and their families.

“My message to all ex-offenders is that each one of us is linked to another person. Many of you must be parents, sons, daughters, husbands, wives, friends of someone.

“But above all else, you as adults are an example to our children,” she said.

Ms Bhatnagar encouraged ex-offenders to maintain good behaviour and refrain from re-offending.

“I commend those who have successfully rehabilitated and also thank the Fiji Corrections Service for supporting their rehabilitation through their dedication,” she said.
