Prove Yourself: Samoan Players Told
The Samoan men and women’s rugby sevens players are given the opportunity to show what they are worth in this weekend’s Oceania Sevens Championship at the ANZ Stadium, Suva. The Samoans arrived into the country with the American Samoa men’s rugby sevens team yesterday.
Samoa men’s rugby sevens coach, Stephen Betham told SUNsports that the side has been preparing well since he joined office two weeks ago.
“We want to see players’ step-up and play Fiji and Australia, who are regular in the World Seven Series,” he said.
“We cannot take any teams lightly, by the way sevens is played, you start late and you are at the back.”
The side will be backing on Tila Mealoi (captain) and winger Samoa Toloa who have been regular in the World Sevens Series last year.
“This is a good chance for the boys to prove themselves for the next season. This is a good stepping stone for the players and the team playing club games back home to step-up.”
Samoan women’s rugby sevens coach Shalom Senara said they had a short time to prepare.
“But we’ve got to be realistic and all these girls have never boarded a plane before and this is our developing team,” he said.
“Our objective is to learn a lot from this international tournament at the end of the day to secure the best and enjoy ourselves. The competition will be really tough with the likes of the Fijiana girls as they are getting better and better along with Australia and Cook Islands.”
