Having to study without proper lighting after Cyclone Winston hit the country failed to stop Krishneel Lal take home the school’s highest award.

Named Dux of DAV College in Ba, Krishneel said he was not worried about anything at all because he was completely focused on his studies.

“I never worried even about who walked past our classroom,” he said.

“So when it came to being without power at home, I was sure I could cope and be the best in my college.”

The 18-year-old is the eldest in the family of two and he said his respect for his parents at home at Varadoli in Ba was among the main factors that kept him focused.

His father, Nand Lal, and mother Sashi, said they were proud of their son.

The Minister for Local Government, Housing, Environment, Infrastructure and Transport, Parveen Bala, said there has not been a better time to be a Fijian because under the current Government a lot of burden was taken off the parents.

“Today’s world recognises skills,” the minister said.

“Now our present education system caters for those students who are talented in other fields.”

He said technical colleges now catered for basic training for interested students.

“These initiatives prevent school dropouts and utilise talents of students that bring in financial returns and job satisfaction,” Mr Bala said.
