The Minister for Education, Mahendra Reddy, has warned school heads and teachers of facing strict disciplinary action if milk and Weet-Bix meant for Year One students were found to be sold on the streets.

This follows a second incident in Lautoka yesterday where another man had sold a carton containing packets of 250ml Rewa Life Milk and Weet-Bix for $20.

Narayan Reddy, a businessman in Lautoka, had bought the items for the second time this week at the Lautoka bus station.

The man he bought it from was about to board a bus bound for Suva and had in his possession at least 10 packets of milk and about 20 packets of Weet-Bix.

The minister said he was going to investigate the matter and strict disciplinary action would follow against those involved in the schools.

“School heads are reminded that the rule is that those products that were going to expire before school begins next year should have been given out to the children,” he said.

“Those products which were not going to expire by the time school began should be locked away in a cupboard and the amount of stock noted and the Education Office notified as to how much of the products were kept there.”

The Lautoka businessman, who is usually seen around the area because of his work with the municipal market, had noticed a man ready to board a bus.

“I asked him if he was selling and he said yes and sold me the items for $20,” Mr Reddy said.

“All he told me was that his sister was a teacher, and gave it to him.”

Mr Reddy said the man then did not say anything else as someone had noticed that Mr Reddy was the person who had highlighted the first incident in the Fiji Sun on Sunday and told the man who he was.
