The Wainimala River yesterday burst its bank causing bridges and roads to go under water in Naitasiri.

The Naqali and Vunidawa Bridge was underwater when the Fiji Sun team arrived at 12pm yesterday.

The only mode of transport was a wooden punt that transported villagers across the flooded Naqali Bridge.

The Vunidawa Bridge, near the Government Station, was heavily under water with strong currents deterring villagers from crossing to the other side

There are 16 Tikinas with 91 villages in the Naitasiri province.

An official from the Ministry of Agriculture, who was carrying out an assessment around the area, said around 11 districts of Naitasiri province were usually affected when there was a bad weather.

The official said once the Naqali and Vunidawa bridges were under water it would be hard for villagers to move around.

A nurse from Naqali Health Centre, who wished to remain anonymous, said it was a challenge to tend to their patients when the bridges and roads were flooded.

“Sometimes when the villagers are sick, we just tell them to bear with us until the weather returns to normal, then we will bring them to the health centre.

“We are trying our best to do whatever we can to help our patients in this bad weather.

“Sometimes the bridges and roads are flooded for three days,” the nurse said.
