The landslide that occurred at the rear end of the Sanatan Chauhan Memorial School in Veisari is now a worrying concern for the school board.

School’s management board president, Vijendra Prasad, said the landslide caused by Tropical Depression 04F could be a disaster because of the current weather conditions.

“We just need it cleared because it might cause a lot of danger if it rains again,” he said.

He said they had requested assistance and professional advice in clearing the landslide, before it caused a lot of damage.

“Luckily it (landslide) did not damage the school building,” he said.

Mr Prasad said they needed attention from the Ministry of Education and other stakeholders so they could save the building.

“We want everything cleared before school resumes, especially the big trees,” he said.

In response, the Minister for Education, Mahendra Reddy, said: “We have examined the landslide at the school. As yet, there is no damage to school. The landslide has occurred at the back of the school about five metres away.

“We are now liaising with FRA (Fiji Roads Authority), to examine the landslide to see if it doesn’t pose any future damage to the school and also to help clear the soil.

“They are now examining it. Engineers will visit the site tomorrow.”
