More than 8000 residents of Votualevu in Nadi will now be able to purchase drugs from the newly-opened Votualevu Pharmacy.

The $100,000 pharmacy was opened by the West Divisional Health Officer, Rakesh Kumar yesterday.

Director and pharmacist of the new pharmacy, Nilesh Kumar says Votualevu residents will now worry less about travelling to other pharmacies.

Mr Kumar said seeing a lot of patients from Votualevu inspired him to establish a community pharmacy.

“There were a lot of patients coming from the Votualevu sector and they had problems with transportation when buying medicine in the night while I was on night shift,” Mr Kumar said.

“So that gave me an idea to open a pharmacy.

“Now they (Votualevu residents) will have easy access to medications because they would not worry about travelling to Namaka or Nadi Town in the night.

“The essential drugs are here which is near to them so they don’t have to worry about travelling far now.”

He added opening hours for the pharmacy would be from 8am to 9pm.

However, he said the normal opening hours could be extended depending on the situation of patients.

Mr Rakesh Kumar said this is an extremely thoughtful initiative because this would benefit the people of Votualevu.

“As you know because of climate change, people have been sick and a lot of diseases have been emerging and the Ministry of Health see this as a benefit for the people,” he said.

“Some people rely on medications and since this service will be benefit the whole of the community.”
