Five punts from the family of missing Galoa villager Nemia Cakauvatu yesterday paid their last rites to bring closure in memory of the 22-year-old.

Cakauvatu’s pregnant partner 18-year-old Cameru Salusalu was still lamenting the loss of the fisherman who went out fishing with the other villagers on Wednesday, December 21. But the group returned without him.

“I will never forgive him for leaving me too soon,” said Ms Salusalu.

“I will surely miss him and for now; I don’t know where to start.

“I feel so lost without him.”

Yesterday the family gathered at their village in Galoa in the province of Serua for a memorial service for their lost brother, friend and a father to be.

His younger sister, 18-year-old Elena Dumu said: “He is like our dad in the family, I can’t accept him leaving so soon.”

Ms Dumu said they always depended on Nemia for everything especially providing food and the needs of the family.

“He hardly says no to anything we ask of him, we will miss him,” she said.

Ms Dumu is a vocational student at Lomary Secondary School in Deuba.

“I will now make sure that I study hard and look after my mom and my young siblings, something that he would have done if he was here,” she said.

The Fiji Sun team accompanied the family with five boats who had a last prayer ritual on the beach before going out to the sea to pay their last respects.

Flower wreaths and colourful leaves were thrown to the sea on the spot where Cakauvatu was last seen.

“He will always be remembered,” said Ms Dumu.
