The first shipment of excavators to Qamea Island in Vanua Levu will leave on board the Government vessel, MLC Vatulawa today.

Permanent Secretary for National Disaster Management, Meleti Bainimarama, said the equipment would be used to clear debris on villages in Qamea that suffered a land slide in the recent Tropical Depression 04F.

He said school tents from the Ministry of Education would be included in that shipment too.

Mr Bainimarama said the excavators included water pumps and chain saws.

He said the Republic of Fiji Military Forces engineer team would leave for Qamea next week to start the cleanup campaign.

Mr Bainimarama said a team of Government officials from the North were currently on the island carrying out an assessment.

He said the Ministry of Lands officials would leave for Qamea next week to carry out a geo-tech survey and assessment on risk to further land slips.

Mr Bainimarama said a report from the Commissioner Northern would determine whether villagers on the island should be relocated or not.

He said the Ministry of Agriculture officials in the North were also on the island carrying out an assessment.

Their report he said would determine whether there was a need for a shipment of food rations to the island.

The landslide in Dreketi Village, Qamea, destroyed 20 houses, including the school and health centre.
